Newton School students honored in Eversource challenge

GREENFIELD — Eversource recently honored nine Newton School students as finalists in the seventh annual Eversource Student Challenge.

The contest encourages Massachusetts students in kindergarten through 12th grade to develop projects, based on their grade level, that highlight the importance of energy-saving measures. According to an Eversource press release, submissions range from designing billboards and writing news articles, to creating superhero characters and showcasing persuasive images.

“These young students have tremendous ideas for saving energy and really show a passion for making this world a better place to live,” commented Eversource Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer Penni Conner. “We’d like to offer our congratulations to all of the winners and our support as they continue practicing energy-saving measures.”

Newton School students in kindergarten through second grade were challenged to create and submit a “Saving Energy Poster,” sharing ways to conserve energy at home, the release states. Yenziely Ortiz-Lugo won third place in the kindergarten category. Aneliz Irizarry-Pacheo came in first place in the first grade category, with Ribensky Desir taking second and Keneysha Rosario Garcia winning third. Additionally, Yara Al Belhadili took first place in the second grade category, Yothnais Miranda won second and Hanzel Ortiz-Lugo came in third.

Monica Arocho Santiago won first place and Yahya Alehadili took second in the third grade category, which asked students to write two limericks about ways to save energy at home and school.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Eversource updated the challenge this year to allow students to submit their projects through an online platform. Instead of an in-person ceremony, a congratulatory video was created to announce this year’s winners. Eversource received 241 entries and selected 47 Massachusetts students as finalists. Amazon gift cards were awarded to the winners in each grade.
